Bali vs Phuket Cost of Living: A Household Budget

The most useful Bali vs Phuket cost of living comparison begins with your household, not an island-wide monthly total. A remote worker renting a compact apartment has a different budget from a family paying international-school fees and maintaining a private-pool villa.

Start with the expenses that are hardest to change: suitable housing, schooling where relevant, transport and healthcare cover. Compare the same routine on both islands. A cheaper restaurant bill cannot compensate for a school place outside your budget or a home that needs a costly daily commute.

Separate the monthly budget from the cash needed to move

A monthly budget measures recurring spending. Moving cash also includes deposits, advance rent, school-entry fees, relocation costs and initial purchases. Confusing the two can make a financially manageable year impossible to fund at the start.

If a landlord asks for a year's rent upfront, divide it by 12 for your comparison—but retain the full amount in your move-in cash calculation. Do the same with annual school fees. Record refundable deposits separately: they are not automatically expenses, but you still need the cash and must satisfy the refund conditions.

Use local-currency quotes first. If you earn in another currency, convert both budgets with the same dated exchange-rate source and keep a separate currency buffer. A payment obligation does not become fixed in dollars simply because a rental advertisement displays a dollar equivalent.

Housing: compare the same home for the same months

Request dated rental quotes for a defined stay rather than comparing a nightly booking in one destination with a twelve-month tenancy in the other.

Specify bedrooms, enclosed workspace, air conditioning, furnishings, parking, pool arrangements and the exact area. Ask which bills and services the rent includes. A villa with a private pool needs a different comparison from an apartment sharing a pool and gym.

Check electricity and water billing, cleaning, internet, pool care, repairs and any common-area charges. Read the termination and deposit clauses before treating a lower rent as better value. For Bali-specific cost categories, see Anteya's villa utilities guide.

If you are considering buying rather than renting, do not set housing cost to zero after purchase. Keep maintenance, recurring charges, insurance, administration and capital committed to the property visible.

International schools: compare the full first year

Two published 2026–27 fee schedules illustrate why tuition alone is an incomplete family budget. They are named-school examples, not island averages or a ranking of educational quality.

Published charge Canggu Community School, Bali: Years 1–2 British International School, Phuket: Year 1
Annual tuition IDR 162,000,000 THB 750,000
Annual capital and materials levies used here IDR 30,500,000 combined Not included as a separate line in this example
Application fee IDR 2,500,000 THB 6,000
First-child registration / placement fee IDR 17,000,000 THB 200,000
Refundable notice deposit / bond IDR 50,000,000 THB 150,000

Sources: Canggu Community School fees and BISP school fees. The CCS levies shown are IDR 21.5 million for capital and IDR 9 million for materials. Conditions, discounts and inclusions differ; use an individual admissions quotation to confirm applicability.

Adding only the listed lines, including the refundable amount, gives IDR 262 million for the CCS example and THB 1.106 million for BISP. These are illustrative first-year cash commitments from the schedules, not complete family budgets or a currency-adjusted school-price comparison.

BISP separately lists school transport at THB 99,900 and additional charges for certain services and activities. The right comparison therefore needs your child's age, available place, curriculum, support requirements and actual journey—not simply the smaller tuition figure.

For families considering a purchase, choose a workable school routine before choosing a property area. Anteya's family property guide discusses that order of decisions for Bali.

Internet: a tariff is not a connection test

Biznet's 15 January 2026 residential price leaflet includes Bali and lists a 100 Mbps plan at IDR 250,000 per month. AIS's online shop displays a 500/500 Mbps fibre offer at THB 500 per month. These are different speed tiers and provider offers, not evidence of either island's average connection quality. Biznet price leaflet, AIS fibre offers.

Confirm coverage at the exact address, installation, hardware, taxes, minimum contract term and eligibility. If reliable video calls matter to your income, test the connection inside the intended workspace at busy times. Price a backup connection separately instead of assuming a headline fibre speed answers the reliability question.

Transport, food and healthcare belong to your routine

Phuket Smart Bus publishes a THB 100 flat fare on its Airport–Patong–Rawai route. That is a useful specific service, not an island-wide transport budget. Check whether its stops and timetable suit your home and destinations. Operator fare page.

For both islands, cost the journeys you would actually make: school runs, work, groceries, exercise and airport trips. Compare door-to-door time as well as money. Do not base a relocation plan on using a vehicle you cannot lawfully and safely drive or insure.

For food, price the same shopping basket and the same balance of cooking and eating out. Imported brands, dietary requirements and frequent restaurant meals can change the result more than a headline comparison of inexpensive local dishes.

For healthcare, obtain personal insurance quotations with the same coverage, exclusions and geographical scope. Check the facilities relevant to your needs directly. Neither a low consultation price nor a general claim about one country's healthcare substitutes for that exercise.

A practical way to choose

Build two versions of your household budget. The first should cover an ordinary month; the second should include annual bills and a disruption allowance. Keep your move-in cash requirement underneath both.

For a family, a confirmed school place and workable commute may determine the shortlist. For a remote worker, a suitable workspace and tested connection may come first. For a part-year resident, price the exact months and check what you continue paying while away.

Renting before buying lets you test these assumptions. Use ordinary weekdays, not just holiday activities, to judge whether the proposed routine works.

Frequently asked questions

Is Bali cheaper to live in than Phuket?

The answer depends on the household, area and services chosen. Compare matched housing quotes and the costs you cannot avoid before drawing a conclusion from small everyday purchases.

Can I live comfortably on a fixed dollar budget?

Test it against actual local-currency commitments, exchange-rate changes and annual expenses. A budget that just covers a normal month may not cover move-in payments or an unexpected repair.

Should I buy before moving?

First establish the area and routine you want. If Bali remains your preferred base after a trial stay, ask Anteya for properties matched to your household and intended use, with recurring costs identified alongside the purchase price.
